SSE Airtricity announces 33% price hike for electricity customers

SSE Airtricity has announced their first price rise for electricity customers this year. Prices will increase by 33% from the 1st June 2022.

This will be unwelcome news for customers with SSE Airtricity blaming sustained high wholesale prices driving the need to increase tariffs further.

What does the price increase mean for customers?

SSE Airtricity has close to 159k electricity customers, around 20% of the market, who will now see their bills increase. And an increase of 33% is a huge jump for SSE Airtricity customers who will see their bills increase by around £248 per year.

And it follows recent price increases by SSE Airtricity. Last year tariffs increased three times by a total of 22.6%, adding around £142 to a typical customers bill.

What SSE Airtricity has said…

Klair Neenan, Managing Director of SSE Airtricity said:

“Throughout winter, we worked hard to limit the local impact of the global energy crisis by absorbing record high wholesale energy costs, hoping to see pressure on prices ease. Sadly, this has not been the case and energy prices continue to demonstrate sharp volatility and upward pressure. Regrettably, this must now be reflected in our prices. We know this price change will be disappointing for our customers and not the news they want to hear. We will continue to watch the market carefully and, as we have done before, will look to reduce our prices as soon as it is possible to do so.
