WHAT PERSONAL INFORMATION DO WE COLLECT AND WHY?
Firstly, we require certain personal information about you to be able to provide any comparisons. The comparison service will collect details on current energy use, current supplier, payment method. We will also collect some personal information such as name and/or email address.
With your agreement we will email details of your comparison quote and options whether you switch or abandon the switching process. You can opt-out of receiving information from us whenever you provide personal data, or by sending us an email. If you decide to register an account we will ask for your email address.
When you use our comparison services to make an application to an energy supplier we need to share your information with them so they can set you up as a customer. We only send them the information you give us relating to your application. Unless you specifically ask us to retain your information, or if you register with us, we remove some of this information from our systems after it is no longer required by us (i.e. once your application to your service provider has been processed).
We also collect information to better understand our users so we can improve our service to you. We will not send you any communications, or pass your information onto any third parties unless you have given us specific permission to do so. Where you have given us permission, we will only send you emails, that we believe may be of interest to you or which you have ‘opted-in to receive.
On occasion, we may also ask you for other personal information in connection with surveys, market research or feedback on any ideas we have to improve our service. Your participation in these features is purely voluntary.
HOW IS MY PERSONAL INFORMATION KEPT SECURE?
We are committed to ensuring that your information is secure. In order to prevent unauthorised access or disclosure, we have put in place suitable physical, electronic and managerial procedures to safeguard and secure the information we collect online.
You may choose to restrict the collection or use of your personal information in the following ways; whenever you are asked to fill in a form on the website, look for the box that you can click to indicate that you do not want the information to be used by anybody for direct marketing purposes if you have previously agreed to us using your personal information for direct marketing purposes, you may change your mind at any time by writing to or emailing us at firstname.lastname@example.org (NI) or email@example.com (IRl).
We will not sell, distribute or lease your personal information to third parties unless we have your permission or are required by law to do so. We may use your personal information to send you promotional information about third parties which we think you may find interesting if you tell us that you wish this to happen but again you can choose not to receive this.
GDPR stands for ‘General Data Protection Regulation’. This is European privacy legislation that takes effect on 25 May 2018. It replaces the previous EU member state laws that implement the EU Data Protection Directive, which was in existence from 1995 to 2018. Power to Switch is covered by the GDPR in situations where we process our customers’ personal data.
What data can Power to Switch process and under which conditions?
According to GDPR, the type and amount of personal data an organisation processes depends on the reason for processing it and what the organisation wants to do with it. In relation to GDPR, Power to Switch adheres to the following rules:
- Personal data must be processed in a lawful and transparent manner, ensuring fairness towards the individuals whose personal data we are processing.
- We will have specific purposes for processing the data and will indicate those purposes to individuals when collecting their personal data and we will collect and process only the personal data that is necessary to fulfil that purpose.
- We will ensure the personal data is accurate and up-to-date, having regard to the purposes for which it’s processed, and correct it if not.
- We will not use the personal data for other purposes that aren’t compatible with the original purpose of collection.
- We will only store personal data for as long as is necessary for the purposes for which it was collected.
- We have technical and organisational safeguards that ensure the security of the personal data, including protection against unauthorised or unlawful processing and against accidental loss, destruction or damage.
What personal data and information can a Power to Switch user access on request?
If you request access to your personal data, Power to Switch will:
- confirm whether or not we are processing personal data concerning you;
- provide a copy of the personal data we hold about you;
- provide information about the processing (such as purposes, categories of personal data, recipients, etc.).
- The first copy of this data will be provided free of charge but we reserve the right to charge a reasonable fee for any further copies.
Will you ask for my consent before using my data?
Yes, under GDPR, we will request your consent before processing your data. This request will outline:
- the purposes for which the data is being processed;
- the type of data that will be processed; and
- how to withdraw consent.
