Want to save £90? Start by switching off your home appliances

Most of us have heard of “vampire devices”. These are the appliances in our home, such as gaming consoles, computer monitors and computers, which continue to drain our energy when on standby or plugged in, because they are not off but running at low capacity.

Turning these devices off at the plug, however, may not seem worth the effort. How much can you really save by turning them 100% off? Well, as it turns out you could save almost £90 a year.

Your television, for instance, uses 10 watts just during standby – which totals about £20 a year, for doing absolutely nothing! Check out the graph below:

Across various appliances throughout your home, you might find other unique ways to cut power usage. This mentions your cooker clock, but not your microwave, or even gaming systems, all of which may sit on standby for days and weeks at a time, if not full time.

If you are looking for other ways to save money on your energy bills, you might think to try comparing your energy deal. If you haven’t switched in the last 12 months, odds are you will find that when you compare, there is a cheaper deal out there for you. In fact, our customers save an average of £140 when they switch with us, and for no extra cost at all.
