firmus energy drops prices by 11.84% for gas customers in the Ten Towns

firmus energy customers have received some positive news today – a price drop on gas costs.

The gas supplier will be reducing its tariffs for customers in the Ten Towns Network area by 11.84% for domestic and small business customers, effective from the 2nd April 2025.

The price cut follows a review by Northern Ireland’s Utility Regulator and will be welcomed by the 70,000 domestic and small business gas customers. The Regulator has stated that there will be no change to the regulated tariffs for SSE Airtricity Gas Supply in the Greater Belfast and West gas networks.

What does this mean for firmus energy customers?

For customers in the Ten Towns, this means the annual gas bill of a typical household with a credit meter will reduce by about £136 per year, those customers with a prepayment gas meter (PAYG) will see their typical costs reduce by around £133 per year.

Although this is the fourth decrease in prices since 2023, gas prices do remain much higher than they were back in 2020-21. Thankfully the peaks witnessed in 2022, were annual costs soared to around £2,350 have fallen back but prices remain volatile and above prices we would traditionally expect.

To demonstrate the volatility in cost take a look at how gas prices in the Ten Towns network have shifted over the last few years…this shows the annual cost for a typical domestic customer (using 12,000kWh per year)…

  • Apr 2021: £518 per year
  • May 2022: £1,504 per year
  • Oct 2022: £2,351 per year
  • Oct 2023: £1,363 per year
  • Apr 2024: £1,151 per year
  • Apr 2025: £1,051 per year

I’m a firmus energy customer…what network am I in?

With the difference in price drops by area, you may be wondering which area you fall into.

Northern Ireland is broken into three separate gas networks – these are the Greater Belfast area, the Ten Towns area and the West network area. Each is distinct and will have different suppliers, cost and tariff options.

The Greater Belfast area covers: south, west, east and north Belfast; Carrickfergus; Newtownabbey; Duncrue and Harbour; Lisburn; Carryduff; Castlereagh; Newtownards; Larne; and North Down.

The Ten Towns area includes Derry/Londonderry, Limavady, Coleraine (including Portstewart and Bushmills), Ballymoney, Ballymena (Broughshane), Antrim (including Ballyclare and Templepatrick), Craigavon (including Portadown and Lurgan), Banbridge, Newry (Warrenpoint), Armagh (Tandragee) and more than 25 other towns and villages in the surrounding area.
